The Only Way is Essex

I love doing what I do and I’ve been fortunate to work on some cool projects. Recently a friend of mine, Luke Yallop, got in contact asking if I would design him a set of graphics for his YZ250. At the time I was looking a lot at retro racing car graphics and design from the world of Formula 1 and the American Indy Car series and I got to thinking about doing a graphics kit based on a 1970’s or 80’s car livery.

So I pitched the idea to Luke and he loved it, especially as (and I had no idea about this at the time) his Dad works for Lotus here in Norfolk and actually worked on some of the racing cars during those periods. So Luke asked if I would base the design on the Lotus Formula 1 cars from the early 80’s when they were backed by overseas  petroleum company, Essex, as they featured a blue base to their design similar to the Yamaha motocross bikes. So after researching the look for a bit I got to work and came up with a design.

The Essex logo lent itself well to a re-imagining into Sandbox, with the normally highlighted red X being given a single serif to give it a similarity with its Sandbox counter part.

I was then lucky enough to get invited to the Lotus Classic Race Team Shop for a photo shoot with the bike next to a 1981 Essex Lotus. I also got an impromptu tour of the shop that houses a lot of the old race cars belonging to double fast bastards like Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell and the late great Ayrton Senna.

Big thanks to Luke Yallop and his Dad, Nick for organising the photo shoot and tour around the lotus shop.
